Model Trains come in numerous different scales, which is the proportion between the real thing and the model train. One of those scales is the N class that’s 2nd only to the most well liked HO model.

One of the major issues that train collectors sometimes face is finding the proper sort of space where they can display their model railroad layout. The fact that the N scale model trains are tiny in size allows them to be shown on a comparatively little surface. Collectors have said this is one of the largest factors making a contribution to the admiration for this scale. Even collectors living in apartments could find the space to put up a layout. A big advantage of the N scale is that, due to its size, it allows you to make a detailed railroad layout. The size is ideal, since it is large enough to display sufficient detail in the locomotive and automobiles and yet small enough to allow for a highly intricate model railroad layout with very detailed topography and cities. To explain, it is not so small that you can not work with it, and yet, not so big that you can’t manage it. Thus forth, for many collectors, it’s the perfect fit.
N scales are also preferred thanks to the high level of detailing that can be found on them. It is vital to understand the N scale isn’t the littlest of the model trains. The Z scale model trains are much smaller and may be a decent fit for folks with very little space. Those that purchase the Z scale will compromise on the standard of the detail to the train, as they do not offer the practical visible aspect that you may be able to find with the N scale.

In current years this particular scale has gained a lot of popularity and the net result is a reduction of the selling cost. And with all markets price is driven by supply and demand. Since supply is up manufacturers are selling them at a lower market cost. Similarly, you’ll be capable of finding a wide variety of accessories catering to this scale at an affordable price .

There are also a wide variety of fuel choices in the N scale model trains. Electrical powered trains are easily the most well liked. Steam powered models are also very popular in the N scale along with an electric version that creates a steam effect.

The N class has been about since 1927 though it wasn’t commercially produced till 1962. I would suggest that you visit a model train show in your neighborhood before you begin to invest in this pastime. Good luck and cheerful collecting.

When you get into model railroading, you quickly learn about model train scales. Every model train that is produced has a scale letter associated with it, such as: HO, O and so forth. The scale let’s you know how true to life it is and more importantly, the physical size of the train itself. The scale refers to the size in comparison with the real thing. For example, 1:220 means the real version of the model train is 220 times larger. If you are a newcomer to model trains, the amount of space will be the first factor in determining which scale to go with. For the hardcore model railroader, mixing scales is a great joy when space permits. Let’s take a look at some of the model train scales and minimum space requirements.

Z Scale trains are 1:220, which means they are very small. I call these “cute” trains and they are perfect for those with an extremely limited space. As with any scale, you can expand the layout as large as you want to go.

Next up is the N Scale, which is 1:160. N scale trains are semi-popular and are great if you want your focus to be on your layout and not the train itself. They are small as well, so you can fit these trains into minimal space.

HO Scale model trains are 1:87 and the most popular scale of model train with model railroaders. They offer a good level of detail and allow you to fit a nice size track into an average size space. I like HO scale trains because they blend in great with any type scenery and you get a good balance as a result.

The O Scales, my favorite, are 1:48 and very popular as well. Lionel has been making great O scale model trains for many decades. These model trains are larger and require a good amount of space for a proper layout. It is possible to setup a small oval track in about a 5-foot by 5-foot area. Although the track will seem small because of the train’s size, it is better than nothing. If your layout is smaller, the O scale train will dominate the view.

There are a couple other scales, such as S and G, but these are the main ones I choose to discuss in this article. Only you can decide which scale is right for you. Some, with limited space, prefer the O scale model trains, even though they dominate the layout, because of their detail and size. O scale trains are “meatier” and are really great for pacifying the children.

All trains have a variance in quality so one scale is not necessarily more expensive than another. Although, I have found O scale model life to be a little bit pricier. You really can’t go wrong with model railroading. It is highly rewarding and wholesome. In the end, you might find yourself collecting model trains across the entire scale spectrum. Get out there and ride the rails!

Copyright (c) 2009 Randy Beckett

If you have been checking out the local model train store I?m sure you have discovered by now how the scale system works. The scales of model railroads are basically used to describe the ratio of the model train to the real version. With regards to the N scale model train it has a ratio of 1:148 that makes it one of the smallest scales on the market. They are extremely popular because of the many advantages they offer collectors with limited space.

Space is usually not the only factor considered when beginning a model train collection. However, if you are extremely limited in space the N scale will surely be high on your list of scales to consider. Due to its popularity the N scale has a wide range of accessories available in both cars and extensive landscape options.

The toy model trains available in N scale are also very popular due to the extensive amount of detailing on them. Even though they are one of the smallest scales they are exceptional in detail. If you are looking for something smaller than the N scale then you would need to go with the Z scale model train. The cost of the Z is among the least expensive, unfortunately you will be giving up a great deal of detail since the scale has become so small it is hardly worth being to creative since it is so small you would not be able to appreciate the work.

With the N scale model trains you have a scale that may be just the right size to fit into a compact space and also large enough to see the craftsmanship it possesses with great attention to detail. The N scale has become one of the popular choices for new collectors as well as those buyers who are purchasing the sets for young engineers during the holiday season. Check out your local model train shop to see the N scale in action. They can be used to layout elaborate model railroad systems. A word of caution: The size of the trains can make large layouts difficult due to difficulty with track conditions. There size can create layout problems if the track becomes too large since derailments are more frequent with smaller scales.

While you are at your model train store be sure and check prices on all of the scales. I believe you will find the N class to be very competitive when it comes to larger scale model trains. Since the N class is very popular right now it is manufactured more than other scales and therefore much less expensive. This means it offers great value for money and even though the material utilized is minimal there is an option to create more detail on it. So it’s a perfect way to start off when you want to spend limited amounts when delving into this hobby for the first time. Fuel for the N scale model train is available in many different varieties. You may use a live steam engine to power it, which can be fueled with butane or you may find mentholated spirit or fuel tablets made out of hexamine. Some other options for creating steam are using electricity. However, many collectors prefer to use plain ole basic electricity to run their model railway trains. All these options make it a very versatile choice. I am a great believer in playing with different models before diving into model trains as a hobby. So, get your shoes on and get down to your local train shop and play around with different scales until you find a good fit for you. Don?t be afraid to ask the shop owner lots of questions. A good model train shop owner will spend all the time you need to help you begin your new hobby. They want you to be a long-term loyal customer.

N scale model trains are defined by a 1:148 ratio model of a real railway train. These models are some of the smallest model trains you can buy which give you many advantages over the larger trains available on the market. For many, the size alone is the biggest advantage of the N scale. Being a small train allows them to be able to enjoy their train in a relatively small space like an apartment, or a small home. Building a layout with a lot of detail is not impossible if you are able to use a train, which is small enough to fit inside of your home without being too small to work on an effective layout.

Many like the N scale model trains because they are able to have a good amount of detail on them. Some people who want a small train will pick the Z scale model train, but will have to compromise on the amount of detail available. Being a little bit bigger allows the manufacturers of the N scale to include details that would be impossible, or highly difficult on a Z scale model. Being able to include detail in the model also makes it a preference for those looking to build their own models from scratch.

Price is another way in which N scale model trains have gained a lot of popularity over the years. The popularity of the N scale means the manufacturer does not have to charge as much for every train they sell. The ease of adding details along with the little amount of material used also play important factors in lowering the cost. Getting started with a model train means limiting costs for most people, which is why the N scale has become so popular over the years.

The different kinds of fuel you can use for the N scale model trains also plays an important factor in it’s popularity. While electricity is the most popular way to power the N scale models, it is possible to build a train, which is powered by live steam. These generally will be fueled by butane, but it is possible to use such things as hexamine fuel tablets and methylated spirit. It is also possible use electricity as the fuel to create the steam which will power the train itself. The many different options for it’s size give it a strong advantage over the Z scale.

Another big advantage N scale model trains have is the ability to weather the trains and the layouts. Buildings and trains can be strained, or scratched in order to make them appear as if they belong in the different layouts you create. Many do not like the appearance of a brand new building or train in an environment that would normally be affected by the environment. Being able to create this look is very important to those who are very detail oriented. Since most people get involved in model railroading because they are detail oriented to begin with, this is a very important aspect.
