Model trains come in many different scales, which is the ratio between the real thing and the model train. One of those scales is the N class that is second only to the most popular HO model. According to the scale chart the N class ratio is 1:148 irrespective of the particular train that it is imitating.

One of the major problems that train collectors generally face is finding the right kind of space where they can display their model railroad layout. The fact that the N scale model trains are small in size allows them to be displayed on a relatively small surface. Collectors have said that this is one of the biggest factors contributing to the popularity of this scale. Even collectors living in apartments may find the space to put up a layout.

A big advantage of the N scale is that, due to its size, it allows you to create a detailed railroad layout. The size is perfect, since it is large enough to display sufficient detail in the locomotive and cars and yet small enough to allow for an extremely elaborate model railroad layout with very detailed topography and cities. In other words, it is not so small that you can’t work with it, and yet, not so large that you can’t manage it. Hence forth, for many collectors, it is the perfect fit.

N scale model trains are also preferred because of the high level of detailing that can be found on them. It is important to know that the N scale is not the smallest of the model trains. The Z scale model trains are much smaller and may be a good fit for people with very little space. Those who purchase the Z scale will compromise on the quality of the detail to the train, as they do not offer the realistic visible aspect that you are able to find with the N scale.

Price is yet another advantage of collecting the N scale model train over the HO or other larger trains. In recent years this particular scale has gained a lot of popularity and the net result is a reduction of the selling price. Since it has become so popular, the overall production of the N scale toy model train has increased. And with all markets price is driven by supply and demand. Since supply is up manufacturers are selling them at a lower market price. Furthermore, you will be able to find a wide variety of accessories catering to this scale at an affordable price.

There are also a wide variety of fuel choices in the N scale model trains. Electric powered trains are by far the most popular. For collectors, the electric model is also considered to be the best choice. Steam powered models are also very popular in the N scale along with an electric version that creates a steam effect.

The N class has been around since 1927 although it was not commercially produced until 1962. If you are considering getting into model railroad collecting the N scale may be the perfect fit for you. I would suggest that you visit a model train show in your area before you begin to invest in this hobby. Getting off to the right start will on increase your enjoyment of this great hobby. Good luck and happy collecting.

Building a model railroad is a classic hobby that continues to grow in popularity year after year. High-end model trains actually end up becoming heirlooms that are passed down from one generation to the next. What sets a model train owner from a master collector is the model railroad layout.

Once you have determined the scale and make of model train you intend to collect you will then need to focus on designing a layout for your collection. It is important to do your due diligence when it comes to selecting the model railroad and scenery you wish to use within your layout. Getting these elements right may make a profound determination in how you layout your railroad. If you are a novice in building a model railroad system it is highly recommended that you purchase a kit for your first layout. Creating a layout from scratch should be left to the veteran collector since it is a very tricky job and one that should not be ventured into lightly. A model train kit will come equipped with the model train scale of your choice, railroad tracks as well as some minor landscaping, equipment and accessories. Kits are easily available in specialty model train shops all around the world and it is the best way to start off from scratch.

For you seasoned collector there is plenty of room for experimentation. An experienced model train collector should stay away from the simple and yes boring circular tracks. Begin to push the envelope with your layout and go for a railroad that offers a more exciting and dramatic route. Ask yourself what do you find interesting about trains in general and build on that thought. The masterpiece comes from your imagination. Put your civil engineer hat on and begin to see the layout as a passage through time. See the terrain with rivers, gorges, mountains, deserts, bridges, highways, etc. The layout should be a growing organism. It can start very small, however the layout should be set up to be expandable beyond the space you have available. Over time you may wish to move the entire layout to a new location and the layout should be able to grow into the new location.

For a true masterpiece you will want to incorporate various track designs. You may want to use a continuous loop with an out and back setup. A continuous loop on its own is monotonous and boring but when you add a variation to the setup it becomes part of a masterpiece. The out and back will allow you to incorporate tunnels and bridges, turning circles and even train stations.

Another option that you can explore is that of point-to-point model railroad layout. Although this is of a simple design where the model train has to go from one end of the track on the way to the other, they tend to be far more exciting yet simple to work with. Most of the times you find these tracks accompanied with a train station.

In conclusion the kind of custom model railroad that you choose to build should reflect your character and passion. This is what will make it unique and allow it to become a masterpiece. You should also consider the availability of space and the level of experience that you have in setting up a model railroad. However, do not limit yourself to a short-term situation when you may have more available space in the future. Be sure and visit model railroad shows and comb through model railroad magazines for ideas. The sky is the limit!

When the hobby of collecting toy model trains is mentioned most people tend to think of those toy trains and tracks that are available for children in the market. However model train collecting is a very serious and expensive hobby maintained by thousands of people around the world.

The term model railroading is used to define the practice of collecting model trains and constructing elaborate tracks for them. Model trains are miniature versions of actual trains that have run the tracks around America and the UK. Model trains, as a hobby is the collecting of intricately created models that are regarded as having high collectable value amongst model train enthusiasts.

Today interested individuals will be able to find a large collection of toy model trains ranging from the pre-world war I era to the post-world war II trains. In general the model trains that predate World War II are regarded as the vintage items that have a higher collectable value status. Trains produced during that time were made out of metal and had a lot of intricate detailing in comparison with the model trains that are built today.

Model trains are available in a wide variety of sizes, known as scales in the model train industry. The Z scale for example is used to denote the smallest size. These trains tend to be so small that one has to observe them from up close in order to appreciate the detailing. It is also somewhat difficult to set up the track plans for Z scale model trains due to the ratio of the track to the topography.

Perhaps the most popular of model trains is the ho scale. These are medium-sized model trains that are easy to work with and display because the have a great deal of detail, which makes them very attractive. Ho scale model trains are highly sought after by beginners as well as professional collectors.

When looking to purchase a model train set it is important to take the availability of space for your bench work into consideration. This is all the more true when it comes to setting out the model railroad track plan. Not only will you be able to find toy model trains in different scales but you will also be able to find railroading in different styles. Amongst the most popular forms of model railroad tracks are the modular, permanent, around the walls and multi-level. If you plan to construct a permanent layout you might want to brush up on you carpentry skills.

The largest sized model train set that you will be able to find in the toy model train collectables is the G scale. These models are so large that you might want to consider setting this model train track up outdoors. The G scale model train is referred to as outdoor model train, which is usually set up in the garden. The G scale toy model train may create a very impressive exhibition especially if you pay attention to the landscaping and track layout planning. However a full-fledge G scale model train and railroading will set you back well over a $1000. Unless you just have unlimited space and better yet and unlimited budget you might want to leave the G scale toy model train for big boys who can afford to maintain this as a hobby.

There are plenty of toy model train scales and gauges to collect. Visit a model train show to see them all up close and personal so you will have a working knowledge of the size of each scale. Take your time since this is a collection hobby that will last a lifetime.

Model railroad collectors consider the act of designing and constructing track plans to be a fine art. This is because you need to exercise a number of elements of art and design when looking to set up your model railroad layout. This includes sculpting, modeling, building and painting as well as electronic engineering to some degree.

One of the most common mistakes made by individuals especially beginners is that they purchase a model train set without taking the availability of space into consideration. However this is one of the most important facts that you need to keep in mind when looking to lay out your tracks. Check out a good model railroad magazine for some good examples.

If you are fond of changing your tracks around frequently than you would want to make use of an integrated roadway track to facilitate your movements. The ideal surface to work upon is a tabletop that measures 4′ x 8′.

It is highly recommended that you play around with some temporary layouts even if you intend on setting up a permanent one. This will give you a better feel and understanding of space planning. One thing that you need to keep in mind from the start is that the strength of the surface that you will use to layout the tracks needs to be strong enough to support the scale of your model train.

Modular layouts tend to be quite popular amongst train collecting enthusiasts. You will be able to find modules in varying lengths although the standard is about 2 feet. The standards have been published for the purpose of making it possible to position and wire modules that have been constructed by different makers.

If you’re looking to build a permanent layout then you need to make the right choice when it comes to the scale of your model toy train. This will have a profound impact on the satisfaction level of your model railroad track plan.

In general O scale is extremely large and takes up a lot of space which is why they’re usually set of tools. You would want to stick with HO and N scale model trains as they can be set up in a relatively smaller place. In case you have a very limited availability of space you can go for the downsized Z standard.

Contemporary model train collectors are fond of constructing narrower layouts that go along the walls of the particular room in which they are placed. L and U shape layouts and track plans are also very ocular today. You might also want to add an island so that you can create an M shaped track plan for your model train.

One of the most interesting model railroad track plans is the multilevel layout. This is a variation on the around the walls style which is achieved by putting a shelf measuring about 2 feet above and other table that measures about three or 4 feet. You can use a helix or a vertical spiral track in order to construct a multilevel layout where your train will actually be moving through the two-levels.

The above-mentioned layouts are just some examples model railroad track planning that you can experiment with as you design your masterpiece. It is generally advised to start off with simpler plans and then slowly progress to the more complicated track plans for your model railroad.
