When the hobby of collecting toy model trains is mentioned most people tend to think of those toy trains and tracks that are available for children in the market. However model train collecting is a very serious and expensive hobby maintained by thousands of people around the world.

The term model railroading is used to define the practice of collecting model trains and constructing elaborate tracks for them. Model trains are miniature versions of actual trains that have run the tracks around America and the UK. Model trains, as a hobby is the collecting of intricately created models that are regarded as having high collectable value amongst model train enthusiasts.

Today interested individuals will be able to find a large collection of toy model trains ranging from the pre-world war I era to the post-world war II trains. In general the model trains that predate World War II are regarded as the vintage items that have a higher collectable value status. Trains produced during that time were made out of metal and had a lot of intricate detailing in comparison with the model trains that are built today.

Model trains are available in a wide variety of sizes, known as scales in the model train industry. The Z scale for example is used to denote the smallest size. These trains tend to be so small that one has to observe them from up close in order to appreciate the detailing. It is also somewhat difficult to set up the track plans for Z scale model trains due to the ratio of the track to the topography.

Perhaps the most popular of model trains is the ho scale. These are medium-sized model trains that are easy to work with and display because the have a great deal of detail, which makes them very attractive. Ho scale model trains are highly sought after by beginners as well as professional collectors.

When looking to purchase a model train set it is important to take the availability of space for your bench work into consideration. This is all the more true when it comes to setting out the model railroad track plan. Not only will you be able to find toy model trains in different scales but you will also be able to find railroading in different styles. Amongst the most popular forms of model railroad tracks are the modular, permanent, around the walls and multi-level. If you plan to construct a permanent layout you might want to brush up on you carpentry skills.

The largest sized model train set that you will be able to find in the toy model train collectables is the G scale. These models are so large that you might want to consider setting this model train track up outdoors. The G scale model train is referred to as outdoor model train, which is usually set up in the garden. The G scale toy model train may create a very impressive exhibition especially if you pay attention to the landscaping and track layout planning. However a full-fledge G scale model train and railroading will set you back well over a $1000. Unless you just have unlimited space and better yet and unlimited budget you might want to leave the G scale toy model train for big boys who can afford to maintain this as a hobby.

There are plenty of toy model train scales and gauges to collect. Visit a model train show to see them all up close and personal so you will have a working knowledge of the size of each scale. Take your time since this is a collection hobby that will last a lifetime.

Building bench-work for the first time for your model railroad is an exciting moment! To create a good first layout for HO scale model trains, a great way to start is with a basic plan for 4 x 8 foot bench-work. You are essentially building a table from a piece of plywood and will construct your exciting new layout on that. Below are some instructions for building a good, solid bench-work for your layout, starting with a materials list and moving into instructions.

The materials you will use include the following:
1 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (a good size for HO scale model trains; use 5/8 inch B-C grade plywood)
3 1×4 x8? (for edge supports)
4 1×4 x8? ripped into 1×2 stock (for 5 joists, plus bracing)
1 1×4 x10? ripped into 1×2 stock (for bracing between legs)
1 2×4 x8? ripped into 2×2 stock (this is for the table legs and is enough for a max height of 48 in)
1 box (100) 1-3/4? dry wall screws (will use 72 of these)
8 1/4×3? carriage bolts (for bolting on the table legs)
8

There are a few things to remember when designing custom layouts for HO scale model railroad trains. First ? enjoy yourself! There is lots of room for creativity, just stay with in a few basic guidelines.

Some very useful online tools including free software to design your own railroad model layout; search for it ? it is even fun to use. You can also do it the ?old fashioned? way, using pencil and paper with a compass for curves and a ruler for straight-aways. Keep in mind that no matter how exact you are in your design, when it comes to laying the materials, some adjustments will always be necessary.

You can also design your layout right on location, placing track pieces and switches loosely in place to get a feel for what it will look like. You can move things around until you have it exactly the way you want it. This is known as ?going free-lance.?

It?s helpful to deliberately leave openings for later changes and additions. Leave some space for a train yard you might be able to add later, or other details you might not have the time or money for in your railroad model right now. This makes for a rewarding, multi-stage project, growing in complexity over time.

There are several different types of yards you can add. A ?hump? yard has a gentle slope with an uncoupler, allowing uncoupled cars to gently roll away from the mainline. A staging yard is a section of track deliberately hidden from view, where you send your trains to wait. It?s useful to simulate long-distance runs, or simply for storage purposes.

One important guideline to keep in mind is the minimum radius for your turns, which in HO scale model trains is 18 inches for 4 axle diesels and 22 inches for 6 axle diesels. As a general rule, things will look and work best with 24 inch radius turns. For a full circle, this means 48 inches diameter, so you will need slightly more than a 4 foot wide space for such a layout.

Another important guideline is the maximum grade, which for HO scale model trains is 4%. What this means is that you should take 100 horizontal inches to rise 4 vertical inches. And that?s a maximum. Try to keep hills somewhat less steep than that. And test your engines to find out what they can handle and how many cars they can pull up that grade you?re creating.

To simulate greater height, instead of creating a steep climb for the rails themselves, drop the ground level underneath. You can create some breathtaking gorge and valley scenery, or even just send a road or another track underneath.

For getting started with your first layout, it?s probably best to stick with sectional track, which is fairly easy to snap together. More advanced modelers of HO scale model trains prefer to construct their layout from flex track. It comes in bundles, so it?s generally cheaper, and, as its name implies, it is a very versatile option, with greater opportunity for customization. It will make your railroad model look good. You can create small, brief curves with more natural lead-ins as opposed to being restricted to standard radii and straightaways in the snap-together sets.

A final point to consider in your design is to be sure you will be able to get to all parts of the finished layout for maintenance purposes. Some advanced modelers constructing larger layouts will even make ?access hatches?, large holes covered by a movable portion of scenery, where they can come up from beneath and actually stand in the middle to work on those less accessible portions. Be sure the opening is large enough to comfortably stand and move around in. The scenery on the removable section should be light and durable for ease of handling. You may also want to create a screen of trees or some other visual obstruction in front of the removable section.

When it comes to model railway layouts, pretty much the skies the limit, depending on your resources and space. You can decide on various kinds of model train scale, and it really depends of what ideas you come up with.

HO railways are the common ones you’ll see; they’re at 1:87 scale, which is eighty seven times smaller than a real railway. You can also acquire different kinds within the HO scale that provide for narrower track lengths.

There are numerous ways in which HO scale model trains are the greatest alternative. Basically, first time train owners find them extremely easy to use, and they’re easier to manipulate, especially with people with big hands.

It is a excellent ’show’ train, and isn’t so little that it makes designing layouts complicated. It’s the easiest to locate in most local hobby shops, and the accessories are in abundance, and if you are creative, can be created at your house.

8×4′ ply board is the regular size for a train design, but you can cut that as you see fit. If you wish to have an sampling of the dedication and time it takes to become a model railway enthusiast, look up some of the model railroad designs you can find online, and you’ll see a score of painstakingly elaborate and complex designs in pictures and videos.

The infinitely dedicated model railroad hobbyist will spend a lot of time and money into making their layout as complex as possible. You can even find organizations with other people who like model railways, where you can pit your setup against others to see who has the best.

Most beginner layouts would start with a basic track design, usually some kind of oval or oval modification. You would have the track go around close to the outside edge of the board, granting access to the engine and cars easier.

Starting with this basic design, you can be as creative and imaginative as you wish. If you don’t have the time to make your own, there are accessory kits out there that include buildings, miniature trees, people, and other decor.

You could make these yourself of course, but it may help to buy starting out. Realistic toy cars can help you create atmosphere, and all types of materials exist to manufacture your own houses from scratch and make them your own.

If you want industrial buildings like silos or other metal, cylindrical buildings, tin cans will substitute just fine; just stack them as high as you like and glue them together, slap a little paint on, and you have a realistic building for your design. There are many more props you can do.

There is a lot of information out there regarding model trains, designs for layouts, and explanations of the different railroad scales that are available. As mentioned before, you can locate sites that have images and videos that show numerous layouts and include photographs of the different types of cars and engines that you can purchase.

You’ll see ideas for homemade accessories, such as, taking plastic greenery apart to use for landscaping on your outlay. Local retailers will have numerous accessories in stock that you can get ideas from, or there may be some excellent packages, where you purchase a train set, and the retailer includes a basic accessory kit as part of the deal.

While there are some model train lovers who like having a garden train out in their yards, and others who’ve dedicated whole attics and basements to huge, detailed, layouts, there are plenty of other hobbyists who don’t have the space for these. But we still want to be able to use more than one layout, or do more than just a simple oval. What can you do if you love trains, but don’t want a huge one? There are plenty of options. The huge number of different people who use model trains means that manufacturers have made tracks and trains in just about every size conceivable. It doesn’t matter whether you have a whole back yard or just the top of your desk. O is one of the most popular sizes of model trains, at about a 1:48 scale ratio in relation to real trains. These use 1 1/4″ gauge tracks. Just like G scale trains, O models are often used for outdoor displays. But not everyone has the space for a garden railroad, or the time to maintain it. If you’d like something a little smaller, but still nicely detailed, you’re after an Ho Model Train. About half the size of O scale trains, at about 1:87 of a real one, HO stands for half O. These use standard gauge train tracks, and are very easy to find. They’re a very popular choice for floor layouts, and are suitable for creative ones that use plenty of track, but they don’t take up too much space. They’re still big enough to be durable, too. These trains offer a good balance of the detail of the larger scales of train and the smaller space requirement of the tiny models such as N scale trains. Because of this, they have managed to remain the most popular scale. This scale did not become popular overnight; when they were first introduced to hobbyists in the UK in the 1930s, they failed to catch on due to the popularity of OO scale trains. When HO scale model trains came to the US around 1950 however, they quickly caught on and are a favorite with model train enthusiasts to this day. More than 65% of hobbyists prefer this scale. Since this is the most popular scale, it is the easiest to find trains, tracks, accessories and premade layouts for; virtually every company who produces model trains and accessories manufactures them in this scale. For the hobbyist who wants model trains which offer plenty of detail, are easy to find and easy to build creative layouts for in a reasonable amount of space, HO scale trains are the way to go.
