If you have been staring at your layout trying to figure out exactly what it needs, consider checking out model train shows in order to get new ideas. Model Railroaders have been going to shows to get ideas ever since the idea was created over a century ago. The best part is you can bring along the whole family and make it an event everyone will have fun at. It may be just the ticket to get your kids involved in the hobby you enjoy so much.
In order to go to model train shows, you will need to be able to find out where they are being held. Different organizations have dedicated themselves to the advancement of the model railroad hobby and they are happy to provide information about model railroad shows. There are different sites you can visit in order to get the latest information about where and when there will be a show in your area. The National Model Railroad Association has plenty of information on their website as well as the information which can be found on the website for the Great Train Expo.
The Great Train Expo is one of the best established of the traveling model train shows. It brings people from all over the state in order to celebrate the newest ideas in model railroading. They even pay the local model train clubs to bring their layouts if they cannot get anyone to volunteer to bring their layout. The ticket price for the show is cheap at seven dollars for adults and free for children under 12. The reason why the shows are so cheap is because the GTE is only looking to expand the love of model railroading.
Another great thing about the different shows are the people you will find, who specialize in different aspects of model railroading such as weathering. They will be on hand in order to teach classes and sell their wares. You might go to the show looking to only pick up some new ideas and end up leaving with a few new trains under your arm. You can buy most anything from trains to landscape pieces such as trees and bushes. Since those selling the pieces are model railroaders themselves, you can be assured all pieces are made with an eye for detail in order to easily fit in with the layout you have created.
When going to model train shows, it is recommended you bring along a notebook and possibly a video camera. You will be able to record everything that inspires you in order to make sure you do not forget a single thing. Make special note of any layouts you see which are close to the one you are looking to create. If you are a member of a train club, you should go with everyone else in order to discuss the different layouts and how the ideas can be applied to your layout.
No matter how long you have been a model railroader, going to model train shows is always a great way to have fun and get inspiration. Even if you do not use any of the ideas you get from the shows, you are sure to get invigorated simply by being close to so many people who share your passion. You will return to your project with a renewed energy to create something, which is inspired, and fun.
